BELLEVILLE AFFORDABLE HOUSING
(SAGONASKA PLACE)

Sagonaska Place was born from the collective vision of housing developer Summers & Co and three First Nations communities: Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, Garden River First Nation, and Missanabie Cree First Nation. Designed to provide affordable, off-reserve housing for both the Indigenous population and the Belleville area, Sagonaska Place aims to address the pressing housing needs within the region due to the Canadian housing crisis.

Missanabie Cree First Nation is constructing an emergency evacuation center on their traditional lands through their Indigenous-led emergency response organization ISN Maskwa.

Our work not only deals with the evacuations of our fellow First Nation communities, whether it is flooding or fire threats, we also respond to other types of crises like suicide epidemics, and water contamination.

Located in midtown Toronto, the redevelopment of 140 Merton Street will be the first non-profit developed Housing Now site led by an Indigenous organization and will be dedicated to providing housing options for Indigenous elders and other seniors with 294 total rental homes.Virtual & in person consultation to MCFN membership over 85% were in support

The design of this home has its residents health and safety in mind; with half of the beds being designated for the Indigenous elders, and the other 50%being for the Sault Ste Marie community.

These investments are addressing the great need for long-term care beds, to assist in taking care of our elders within the community. The Indigenous residents cultural needs will be prioritized within the space, giving them a home that they can thrive in with their families.
