Evacuation Shelter
MCFN has in recent years partnered with Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) to become a national leader in Indigenous-led emergency management service for Indigenous People and communities displaced due to natural disasters (floods and fires), infrastructure failures and social crises. To this end, we have led the development of a first-of-its-kind First Nations Emergency Operations Centre (located in Sault Ste. Marie) that provides 24/7 incident command service for Indigenous communities who require emergency response support. Our emergency management operations in 2025 alone supported some 6000 evacuees from 7 communities, and employing as many as 500 persons during evacuation events. The Evacuation Shelter project is to meet further demand while also providing the community space for socializing, community engagement and gatherings.
